Los 8 mejores whiskies del mundo

Cada vez son más los que sienten especial atracción por esta bebida destilada que se elabora a partir de granos como los de la cebada, el centeno o el maíz. Aunque, hasta que no te metes de lleno en este apasionante mundo, no te das cuenta de que hay multitud de tipos y estilos diferentes de whisky. En realidad, lo cierto es que tanto su sabor como su aroma irá variando en función del origen y el método de destilación empleado.

Solo en Escocia, para que te hagas una idea, ya vas a encontrarte con whiskies muy diferentes dependiendo de la región en la que te encuentres (Highlands, Lowlands, Islay, Campbeltown o Speyside). Y esto es algo extrapolable a prácticamente todos los países productores de este destilado que también tendrá unos matices diferentes en función de varios factores: si es de malta, de grano o blended; si es de doble o triple destilación; cómo ha sido su maduración; o si pertenece a la categoría de bourbon o de whisky de centeno (en el caso de los americanos).

En último término, todo esto hará que nos enfrentemos a un whisky más suave y fácil de beber o a uno más complejo, seco, especiado, ahumado... O incluso con notas de frutas, vainilla, caramelo, roble tostado, pimienta o canela. Como vas a ver con algunos de los ejemplos que te traemos a continuación, se trata de un mundo prácticamente inabarcable desde el punto de vista organoléptico. Pero es precisamente eso lo que lo convierte en algo excitante.

Algunos de los mejores whiskies del mundo

¿Cuál es el mejor whisky del mundo? Difícil respuesta, ¿verdad? Sobre todo si toca responder a esta pregunta ahora, que resulta que hay un nivel altísimo en países como Japón, Estados Unidos, Canadá, Irlanda o Escocia. Pero esto no quita que sí podamos hacer una selección de algunos de los más destacados, estén o no arrasando en prestigiosas citas internacionales como el ISC (International Spirits Challenge), concurso del que os hablaremos en profundidad más abajo.

Lagavulin 16 Años

Esta destilería está situada en la bahía de Lagavulin, de ahí su nombre. Hablamos de una casa fundada en 1816 por John Jonston que, prácticamente desde entonces, se dedica a producir este y otros grandiosos whiskies. En este caso, se trata de un Single Islay Malt que madura durante 16 años hasta crear su carácter seco e intenso. Como el resto de whiskies emblemáticos de la isla de Islay, se caracteriza por su intensidad aromática, en la que no faltan notas yodadas y un final marcado por el Jerez y la turba.

El Lagavulin 16 Años es un whisky seco ligeramente especiado que sorprende, justo al final, gracias a ese toque ahumado. Un poderoso malta que se obtiene tras una destilación muy lenta (la primera lleva alrededor de 5 horas y para la segunda se necesitan 9 horas), lo que le aporta una suavidad muy sutil el paladar.

Suntory Yamazaki 12 Años

Elaborado en la destilería de malta más antigua y prestigiosa de Japón, es sin duda el gran referente del whisky japonés tipo Single Malt. Combina como pocos elegancia y suavidad, ofreciendo una experiencia muy sabrosa que viene acompañada de un aroma a fruta madura y vainilla, consecuencia del envejecimiento en barricas de roble blanco y Mizunara.

Yamazaki se ubica cerca de la población de Shimamoto (en la prefectura de Osaka) y es mundialmente conocida por la producción de un whisky que se desmarca del resto por su estilo dulce, afrutado y especiado. La destilería original fue fundada originariamente por Shinjiro Torii en 1924, pero más tarde se convirtió en propiedad del grupo Suntory (nombrado cuatro veces 'Destilador del Año' en los ISC).

The Balvenie French Oak 16 Años

Viajamos hasta una histórica destilería fundada en 1892 por William Grant y situada en Dufftown, en las Highlands escocesas. Es la responsable de auténticas joyas para el paladar, entre las que se encuentran este whisky artesanal de cosecha propia acabado en barricas de vino francés Pineau des Charantes, lo que le aporta toques de notas de pomelo, geranio, frutas glaseadas y jengibre.

Su proceso de elaboración lo convierte en un whisky con una gran personalidad. Conviene matizar que Pineau es un vino generoso que se obtiene a partir de zumo de uva sin fermentar, al que se le añade un aguardiente de coñac y se deja madurar. Es lo que le confiere a este single malt esa profundidad de sabor única y excepcional.

The Balvenie

Laphoriag Reserva 10 Años

De nuevo nos topamos con los aromas característicos de los whiskies Islay. Es áureo y almibarado, lo que no quita que contenga toques frutales y un sutil aroma a vainilla que nos deja un largo retrogusto. Tras la primera fase de su destilación, se deja reposar a orillas del mar durante una larga década, lo que le confiere el gusto salado a yodo, muy característico de la brisa del océano Atlántico.

Este Laphoriag 10 Años, que está al alcance de todos los bolsillos, es fácilmente reconocible por su sabor, que se consigue tras llevar a cabo una maduración en pequeñas barricas con sabor turboso a la par que ahumado. Concretamente, se trata de barricas de roble de Kentucky (antes usadas para bourbon) y roble blanco (antes usadas para vino de Jerez). Del resto se encarga el agua del Kilbride Dam que se emplea en la destilación.

Glenfiddich 21 Años

La calidad de este whisky ha sido reconocida por multitud de expertos y medios especializados, así que no estamos descubriendo nada nuevo. Glenfiddich 21 años se caracteriza por un aroma intenso a vainilla y matices de plátano, higo o jengibre combinados con otros más florales (principalmente lima). Uno de los grandes éxitos de esta destilería que fue la primera, en 1963, en empezar a comercializar su whisky de malta en todo el mundo (hasta entonces se limitaban a venderlo a mezcladores).

El hecho de que pase sus últimos meses de maduración en barricas de ron del Caribe hace que se potencien sus tonos dulces con aroma a toffee. Esto, obviamente, no quita que sea un whisky escocés de corte tradicional en todo su esplendor. De hecho, es el Malt Master Brian Kinsman quien se encarga de seleccionar cada uno de esos los barriles donde se depositan antes de ser embotellados.

Talisker 10 Años

Estamos ante el buque insignia de la destilería escocesa que fue fundada en 1830 por los hermanos MacAskill para, un siglo más tarde, terminar siendo adquirida por Distillers Company. Es la más antigua de la isla de Skye, al noroeste del país, y está situada a orillas del lago Harport. Talisker 10 Años es un whisky que presenta un aroma intenso a turba y un sabor tímidamente dulce que se acompaña de notas de frutos secos y nubes de humo.

Se trata del único whisky de malta destilado junto al mar en la isla de Skye. Que no te engañe lo asequible de su precio, estamos ante una notable referencia que ha sido premiada en certámenes internacionales como el Ultimate Spirits Challenge (2016) o The Scotch Whisky Masters (2014).

Johnnie Walker Blue Label Elusive Umami

Si buscas algo diferente, no puedes perderte esta genialidad que es fruto de la colaboración entre el chef Kei Kobayashi, con 3 estrellas Michelin en el restaurante parisino Kei, y la Master Blender Emma Walker. A ellos le debemos esta edición limitada Johnnie Walker Blue Label Elusive Umami que combina los sabores dulces y salados con gran acierto.

En este caso merece especialmente la pena hacer una breve parada en su proceso de creación, ya que solamente una de cada 25.000 barricas pasó el corteque necesitaban para obtener ese sabor —nada previsible— del umami. El resultado es un whisky escocés muy equilibrado que, en nariz, muestra notas dulces y saladas, desde manzanas verdes y rojas frescas hasta el dulzor de confitería o toques de anacardo. Su sabor dulce, suave y largo nos trae a la memoria frutas como la mandarina o la naranja sanguina.

The Macallan Sherry Oak Cask 18 Años

Cerramos nuestra particular selección por todo lo alto, con un The Macallan que forma parte de la familia Sherry Oak, que es aquella en la que se incluyen aquellos whiskies de malta únicamente madurados en barricas de roble que han sido seleccionadas a mano y aderezadas con vino de Jerez para conseguir mayor riqueza y complejidad.

Tómalo solo, sin hielo ni agua, para apreciar los intensos sabores de roble maduro, jengibre y pasas. Y, de paso, disfruta de ese color caoba claro tan especial. Se trata de un whisky para ocasiones muy especiales que ha sido elaborado, con mucho mimo, en la destilería de whisky de malta más grande de Escocia. Un lugar muy especial a orillas del río Spey que merece una visita.

Medalla de Oro a los mejores whiskies del mundo

Por último, descubrimos cuáles han sido los whiskies que han conseguido una medalla de oro en el International Spirits Challenge (ISC) de 2023. Un certamen internacional de destilados y espirituosos que lleva celebrándose 28 años, en el que participa un jurado especializado que cata a ciegas las referencias llegadas desde todos los rincones del mundo.

En esta ocasión, hablamos de un total de 226 referencias escocesas, 36 americanas/canadienses, 36 de Japón, 38 procedentes de Irlanda y 12 mundiales. A continuación, te dejamos el listado completo de los 348 whiskies con medalla de oro, una cifra muy similar a la de la edición del 2022, cuando se entregaron un total de 383 medallas en esta misma categoría.
